Central Government notifies appointments of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar, as Supreme Court judges

Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar, who are currently Chief Justices of the Allahabad and Gujarat High Courts, respectively, have been appointed as Supreme Court justices by the Central Government. The Supreme Court will have a full complement of 34 judges after their appointments. The Supreme Court last had all 34 of its judges on the bench from September 2019 through November 2019.

The Supreme Court collegium recommended their names for promotion on January 31. The 6-member collegium published comprehensive justifications for its choice.

The second-ranked judge on the All India Seniority of High Court Judges is Justice Bindal, a member of the Punjab & Haryana High Court and currently the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. The collegium noted that P&H HC is not adequately represented in the Supreme Court.

The Karnataka High Court native Justice Aravind Kumar is ranked number 26 on the All India Seniority List. The resolution further noted that Justice K M Joseph, a member of the collegium, had voiced his reluctance on the grounds that Justice Kumar's name could be taken into consideration in the future.

Based on a suggestion submitted by the collegium in December 2022, the Center announced the nomination of five judges to the Supreme Court on February 4. On February 6, Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Manoj Misra, Sanjay Karol, PV Sanjay Kumar, and Pankaj Mithal took their oaths of office.
