The Ernakulam district consumer forum recently penalized Kerala Matrimony, an online platform facilitating matrimonial services, with a fine of Rs 25,000 due to inadequate service provision, following complaints from users on social media.
In response to a complaint lodged by an individual who had registered on Kerala Matrimony, the consumer forum directed the company to refund a registration fee of Rs 4,100, pay Rs 3,000 towards litigation costs, and provide Rs 25,000 as compensation.
The complainant alleged that, despite registering in 2019, the services offered by Kerala Matrimony were unsatisfactory.
In defense, Kerala Matrimony argued before the consumer forum that it operates as an intermediary, facilitating access to communication systems for third-party information transmission and temporary hosting.
This decision underscores the forum's stance on ensuring consumer rights in cases of service deficiencies within online matrimonial platforms.
