The Assam Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will challenge the bail granted to two accused in singer Zubeen Garg's death case before the Supreme Court, Special Director General of Police (CID) and Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief Munna Prasad Gupta said on Sunday.
The Gauhati High Court recently granted bail to Garg's cousin Sandipan Garg and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta. Gupta said the investigating agency had examined the bail orders and sought legal opinion before deciding to challenge them.
Speaking to reporters at the CID headquarters in Guwahati, Gupta said the appeal would be filed once the courts reopen after the holidays.
He declined to comment on the High Court's observations regarding the evidence against the accused but reiterated that the CID had decided to challenge the bail orders.
On the investigation and trial, Gupta said the CID Police Station registered the case in 2025 and that the trial was proceeding on a day-to-day basis before the designated fast-track court. He added that 134 witnesses had been examined so far and described the progress of the trial as satisfactory.
Gupta also clarified that another case registered by the CID Police Station was separate from the main Zubeen Garg death case and remained under investigation.
Sandipan Garg, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police and the singer's cousin, was granted bail on Saturday. Mahanta had secured bail earlier, on October 9.
Meanwhile, two of Garg's personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya, were granted bail on September 29 in a separate disproportionate assets case. The Special Court reportedly cited alleged procedural lapses in their arrests.
However, the two officers continue to remain in custody in connection with other charges linked to the case, as they have not secured bail in those proceedings.
