26 Supreme Court Cases Pending for Over 30 Years; Nearly 96,000 Cases Await Disposal
Twenty-six cases have been pending before the Supreme Court for over 30 years, while 558 cases have remained unresolved for more than 20 years, the Central government informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
According to data from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), the Supreme Court had a total pendency of 95,936 cases as of July 28, 2026.
The figures were shared by Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal in a written reply to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Dilip Kumar Ray.
The data revealed that 10,094 cases in the Supreme Court have been pending for over 10 years. Additionally, 24,611 cases are more than five years old, while 49,248 cases have remained pending for over one year.
The government also disclosed that the 25 High Courts across the country collectively have 63.76 lakh pending cases. Of these, 80,634 cases have been pending for more than 30 years, while over 4.51 lakh cases are more than 20 years old.
More than 16 lakh High Court cases have remained pending for over a decade. Nearly 29.51 lakh cases are over five years old, and approximately 51.94 lakh cases have been pending for more than one year.
Among the High Courts, the Allahabad High Court has the highest overall pendency, with 12.28 lakh cases. It also accounts for the largest number of cases pending for more than 30 years at 53,787. The court has 1.61 lakh cases pending for over 20 years and 4.88 lakh cases that have remained unresolved for more than a decade.
The Calcutta High Court reported 11,417 cases pending for over 30 years, followed by the Bombay High Court with 3,901 cases, the Patna High Court with 3,513 cases, and the Madras High Court with 3,118 such cases.
In terms of overall pendency, the Rajasthan High Court ranks second with 6.96 lakh pending cases, followed by the Bombay High Court with 6.57 lakh and the Madras High Court with 5.67 lakh cases.
The government further informed Parliament that district and subordinate courts across the country have a combined pendency of 4.98 crore cases, including 81,275 cases that have remained pending for more than 30 years.
