Centre Notifies Appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court

New Delhi, September 4, 2025

The Central Government on Thursday officially notified the appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the development on social media platform X, posting:

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Judge of the Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.”

Justice Chandrashekhar has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court since the elevation of former CJ Justice Alok Aradhe to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his appointment as Chief Justice on August 25, 2025.

Born on May 25, 1965, Justice Chandrashekhar pursued his LL.B. at Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, graduating in 1993, and enrolled with the Delhi State Bar Council later that year. In a distinguished career spanning nearly two decades as an advocate, he argued over 3,500 cases, primarily before the Supreme Court of India, across both criminal and civil matters.

He was first appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on October 7, 2013, and became a permanent judge on June 7, 2014. Between December 29, 2023, and July 4, 2024, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, before being transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.

On July 21, 2025, Justice Chandrashekhar was sworn in as a judge of the Bombay High Court, and within weeks, took over as its Acting Chief Justice. He is now confirmed as the full Chief Justice and will hold office until his superannuation in May 2027.
