CJI Appoints Justice JK Maheshwari As Chairman, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has appointed Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).

The appointment will be effective from 24 November 2025, following an official notification issued on 20 November under Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

The SCLSC is responsible for ensuring free legal assistance to eligible litigants and advancing legal aid, representation, and access to justice before the Supreme Court. As Chairman, Justice Maheshwari will guide policy decisions, supervise legal aid programs, and oversee the committee’s overall administration in accordance with the objectives of the Legal Services Authorities Act.

Justice Vikram Nath, who previously headed the SCLSC, has taken charge as the Executive Chairman of NALSA.

Justice Maheshwari has been a judge of the Supreme Court since 2021 and earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
