Delhi HC Strongly Condemns Police Sub-Inspector for Misbehaving with Lawyers, Orders Written Apology

The Delhi High Court on Monday took serious exception to the conduct of a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector who verbally abused and intimidated lawyers representing both the complainant and the convict within the High Court premises.

Justice Arun Monga acted on a joint verbal complaint from the counsels, reporting that Sub-Inspector Narinder of Okhla Industrial Area police station had verbally abused, intimidated, and threatened them with dire consequences, stopping short of physical assault. When a senior counsel attempted to intervene, he too faced similar misconduct.

“I am of the view that such misconduct on the part of SI Narinder cannot be countenanced under any circumstances. He is supposed to be a protector of law and not a predator. He cannot turn his khaki to the level of such arrogance… merely because he thinks he is above law,” the Court observed.

Initially, the Court considered ordering registration of an FIR against the officer but refrained after he tendered an apology. However, Justice Monga mandated that the apology be submitted in writing through an affidavit.

“Looking at the conduct of SI Narinder, the apology be submitted in writing by way of an affidavit. The needful be done by tomorrow,” the Court directed.
