The Delhi High Court has nominated Ms. Sonia Mathur, Senior Advocate, and Ms. Monika Arora, Advocate, as women members of the Bar Council of Delhi, pursuant to the directions issued by the Supreme Court.

The development was communicated through a letter dated September 15, 2026, issued by the Delhi High Court to Col. Arun Sharma (Retd.), Secretary, Bar Council of Delhi.

The letter, marked “Most Immediate, Out at Once, Confidential,” refers to the Supreme Court’s order dated September 2, 2026 concerning the co-option of two women members to complete the composition of the Bar Council of Delhi.

Sonia Mathur and Monika Arora Nominated

According to the communication, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court has been pleased to nominate:

• Ms. Sonia Mathur, Senior Advocate, Enrolment No. D/328/1990

• Ms. Monika Arora, Advocate, Enrolment No. D/912/2007

as women members of the Bar Council of Delhi.

The nominations have been made in terms of the Supreme Court’s order dated September 2 passed in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 1049 of 2026, M. Varadhan v. Union of India & Ors.

To Complete Composition of Bar Council

The Delhi High Court’s communication specifically states that the two nominations have been made “to complete the composition of Bar Council of Delhi” in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions.

The letter was issued by Dr. Gagan Nagpal, Joint Registrar (Management & Coordination Cell-I), for the Registrar General, Delhi High Court.

The communication was addressed to the Secretary of the Bar Council of Delhi and refers to the Council’s earlier letter dated September 5, 2026 on the issue.

Supreme Court Direction

The nomination follows the Supreme Court’s intervention concerning the composition of the Bar Council of Delhi and its direction for the inclusion of two women members.

With the Delhi High Court now making the nominations, Sonia Mathur and Monika Arora are set to form part of the Bar Council of Delhi, subject to completion of the consequential formalities.
