Gautam Gambhir Moves Delhi HC Against Deepfakes, Seeks ₹2.5 Crore Damages

Today, famous indian critickter Gautam Gambhir has approached the Delhi High Court seeking urgent legal action against the spread of AI-generated deepfakes, fake videos, and unauthorised merchandise using his identity. He has also claimed damages of ₹2.5 crore.

In his plea, Gambhir has alleged a “coordinated campaign” of digital impersonation involving deepfake videos, voice cloning, and the commercial misuse of his name, face, and voice. Calling it a serious issue in the era of artificial intelligence, he said his identity was being misused to spread misinformation and generate revenue.

The case, filed before the Commercial Division of the High Court, seeks an urgent ex-parte interim injunction to remove such content and stop its further circulation.

According to the complaint, there has been a sharp rise in fake content since late 2025 across platforms like Instagram, X, YouTube, and Facebook. Among the widely circulated clips were a fake “resignation” video with over 29 lakh views and another video falsely showing him commenting on senior cricketers’ World Cup participation, which received over 17 lakh views.

The plea also highlights the unauthorised sale of merchandise featuring his name and likeness on e-commerce platforms such as and .

A total of 16 defendants have been named in the suit, including social media accounts and major intermediaries like , , and , along with government authorities such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Telecommunications.

Gambhir has sought ₹2.5 crore in damages, a permanent injunction restraining the use of his identity, and directions for the takedown of all infringing content. The case is expected to have broader implications on how Indian courts address deepfakes, AI misuse, and digital identity theft involving public figures.
