The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against a Senior Advocate for what it described as “outrageous and glaring conduct” during a virtual court appearance on June 26, 2025.
The lawyer was seen drinking from a beer mug and speaking on his mobile phone while court proceedings were underway.
The incident, which occurred before Justice Sandeep Bhatt, was captured on video and widely circulated, prompting strong condemnation from a Division Bench comprising Justice AS Supehia and Justice RT Vachhani.
The Court noted that the conduct had "wide and serious ramifications" for the judiciary and the rule of law. It cautioned that failing to act on behaviour that “dents the glory and dignity of the institution” could undermine public confidence and the authority of the judicial system.
The Bench also expressed concern over the impact such actions may have on younger members of the legal profession, emphasizing that senior advocates are seen as role models. The Court remarked that the conduct “unquestionably defies the privilege of Senior Counsel” conferred by the High Court and indicated that the advocate’s designation may be reconsidered.
While reserving its final decision, the Court has barred the advocate from appearing virtually before the Bench until further orders. It has also directed the Registry to submit a detailed report, preserve the video evidence, and place the matter before the appropriate bench. Additionally, the Registry has been asked to bring the order to the notice of the Chief Justice.
