Gujarat HC Upholds Death Sentences of 38 Convicts in 2008 Ahmedabad Serial Blasts Case

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday upheld the convictions of all 49 persons found guilty in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case, affirming the sentences awarded by the trial court.

A Division Bench of Justice AY Kogje and Justice Samir J. Dave dismissed the appeals filed by the convicts and upheld the death penalty awarded to 38 of them. The Court also affirmed the life imprisonment imposed on the remaining 11 convicts, according to PTI.

The case relates to the serial bomb blasts that rocked Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008, when around 22 explosions occurred across the city, killing at least 56 people and injuring hundreds. Among the targeted locations were the Civil Hospital and LG Hospital. The terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In February 2022, a special court in Ahmedabad convicted 49 of the 77 accused after an extensive trial. Of those convicted, 38 were sentenced to death while 11 were awarded life imprisonment.

The special court had acquitted 28 accused for lack of evidence, while one accused had turned approver and testified for the prosecution during the trial
