Supreme Court Judge Suggests EV Charging Stations on Court Premises

During the hearing of a case, Supreme Court Justice PS Narasimha suggested that electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities should be installed on the Supreme Court premises, observing that such an initiative could encourage people to switch to electric vehicles.

A Bench comprising Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe was hearing Shri Swami Samarth Agencies Pharmaceutical and Consumer Distributors v. M.I.D.C. & Ors., Diary No. 53282/2026, in which Senior Advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu was appearing.

During the proceedings, the issue of EV charging facilities came up. Justice Narasimha recounted a conversation in which he had suggested that a person planning to buy a car should consider purchasing an electric vehicle. The person, however, pointed out the lack of adequate charging infrastructure.

Justice Narasimha observed that the absence of charging facilities is one of the reasons people may hesitate to purchase electric vehicles. He said that if charging points were available at places such as the Supreme Court, lawyers and others could charge their vehicles while attending court proceedings.

The Judge remarked:

“If you park your [electric car] in the Supreme Court here, by the time we dismiss the matter, you go back and your car is charged; that would be advantageous.”

Justice Narasimha also highlighted the environmental benefits of moving from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles, referring to the difference such a transition can make in terms of pollution and sustainability. He suggested that the concerned authorities should consider providing EV charging facilities at the Supreme Court.

The observation was made orally during the hearing and related to the broader issue of improving charging infrastructure to facilitate greater adoption of electric vehicles.
