Justice Alpesh Yeshwant Kogje was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday, with Governor Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel administering the oath of office.

The Union Government cleared his appointment on September 5, days after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his elevation on August 31.

More than 20 judges of the Gujarat High Court travelled to Madhya Pradesh to attend the oath-taking ceremony, which was also attended by a large number of lawyers from Gujarat.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court currently has a sanctioned strength of 33 judges.

Justice Kogje was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court in April 2016 and was made a permanent judge in March 2018.

He completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1990 and obtained his law degree from the Faculty of Law, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, in 1993. He enrolled as an advocate the same year.

During his practice, Justice Kogje served as Additional Public Prosecutor from 2002 to 2007 and also appeared as Standing Counsel for the Central Excise and Customs Department. He later served as Special Public Prosecutor before the High Court in cases relating to the 2002 Godhra riots.
