Justice Ashutosh Kumar took oath on Monday as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. The swearing-in ceremony was held in Assam, where Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office.
Born on October 1, 1966, Justice Kumar completed his schooling at St. Michael’s High School in Patna. He pursued his undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and later obtained his law degree from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.
Justice Kumar enrolled as an advocate on July 9, 1991, at the Patna High Court. Over the course of his legal practice, he handled several high-profile criminal cases, including those involving death penalty convicts. He also briefly served as a Government Pleader for the State of Bihar.
He was elevated to the bench as a Judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014. He was later transferred to the Delhi High Court on January 7, 2015, before being repatriated to the Patna High Court on November 24, 2017
