Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has officially taken charge as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a swearing-in ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Gavai will serve as CJI for a term extending slightly over six months, until November 23, 2025.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, S. Jaishankar, Piyush Goyal, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and former President Ram Nath Kovind. Former CJI Sanjiv Khanna and several sitting judges of the Supreme Court—Justices Surya Kant, A.G. Masih, P.S. Narasimha, B.V. Nagarathna, Bela Trivedi, among others—were also present.
