Justice Sanjeev Kumar Appointed Acting Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh HC

Today, Justice Sanjeev Kumar has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh following the elevation of Chief Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court.

The appointment was notified by the Department of Justice under the Ministry of Law and Justice on June 1, 2026.

Born on April 8, 1966, Justice Sanjeev Kumar earned his law degree from the University of Jammu in 1989. He enrolled as an advocate the same year and built a legal practice primarily before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir.

Over the course of his career at the Bar, he handled a wide range of matters, including civil, constitutional, service, and taxation cases. He also served as the Senior Additional Advocate General for the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, Justice Kumar was appointed as a permanent judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on June 6, 2017.

During his tenure on the Bench, he has authored several notable judgments on issues relating to constitutional rights, service matters, preventive detention, land laws, and public administration.

With his appointment as Acting Chief Justice, Justice Sanjeev Kumar will lead the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh until a regular Chief Justice is appointed.
