Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath has highlighted the extraordinary speed with which courtroom observations spread on social media, remarking that even casual oral remarks made during hearings become viral before a judge reaches home.

Speaking at the launch of IBC Mantra: The Law and Practice of Insolvency and Bankruptcy at the Delhi High Court, Justice Nath observed that the digital age has dramatically transformed the way information from courtrooms is consumed and circulated.

'Courtroom Remarks Go Viral In A Jiffy'

Referring to the growing influence of social media platforms, Justice Nath said:

"You say something in court, sometimes even in passing, and before you even reach home, it is everywhere. It has found its way into Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and every other platform."

His remarks come amid increasing public attention on oral observations made during court proceedings, many of which are widely circulated online within minutes.

Technology Has Changed Legal Research

Justice Nath also reflected on how technology has transformed legal research. He recalled that when he entered the legal profession, lawyers depended on physical libraries, often waiting for books to become available. Today, young lawyers can access vast legal resources instantly on their laptops.

At the same time, he cautioned that while information is abundant, meaningful legal analysis remains invaluable.

"Information is available in abundance. What is much harder to find is perspective."

Need For Quality Legal Scholarship

Justice Nath emphasized that a good legal commentary should not merely reproduce statutory provisions or judgments but explain the principles behind the law and its evolution. Speaking about the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), he noted that it continues to generate new legal questions, making authoritative commentaries increasingly important for lawyers and judges alike.

The event was attended by Supreme Court Justices Manmohan and Sanjeev Sachdeva, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, former Supreme Court Judge Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Senior Advocate Tarun Gulati, Advocate Kumar Sambhav, and other members of the legal fraternity.
