Karnataka Govt Orders Judicial Probe Into Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede That Claimed 11 Lives

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced the formation of a one-member judicial commission to investigate the tragic stampede that took place outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, ahead of a celebratory event for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory.

The incident left 11 people dead and several others injured.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said the decision was taken at a state cabinet meeting held earlier in the day. The commission will be headed by former Karnataka High Court judge, Justice John Michael Cunha, who served as a permanent judge of the High Court from 2018 after being appointed as an additional judge in 2016.

Siddaramaiah also informed that a magisterial inquiry had already been initiated immediately after the incident. The cabinet extensively discussed the matter on Thursday, and accountability measures are now underway.

The investigation into the case has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The police have been directed to initiate legal proceedings against RCB representatives, the event management firm DN, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for alleged lapses in planning and crowd control.

In a significant move, the state government has also decided to suspend Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and several other senior officers pending inquiry.
