Born on March 23, 1965, in Ahmedabad, Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria hails from a distinguished family of lawyers originating from Mandvi-Kachchh.
His father also served in the judiciary, inspiring a legacy of legal service.
He completed his graduation from H.L. College of Commerce, Ahmedabad, and went on to pursue law at Sir L.A. Shah Law College, earning his LL.B. in 1988. The following year, he obtained a Master’s degree in Law from the University School of Law, Ahmedabad.
Justice Anjaria began his legal practice in August 1988 at the Gujarat High Court under the mentorship of Senior Advocate Shri S.N. Shelat. Over the years, he handled a broad spectrum of cases involving constitutional matters, civil law, labour disputes, and service jurisprudence. He served as Standing Counsel and Panel Advocate for various bodies including the High Court and subordinate courts, the State Election Commission, Gujarat Information Commission, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation, and several municipalities.
In 1992, he was awarded a Research Fellowship by the Late Shri Navinchandra Desai Foundation for his work on Freedom of Speech and Expression – With Reference to Media. He also contributed to the legal community as an Honorary Associate Editor of the Gujarat Law Herald, and served as a trained mediator at the High Court Mediation Centre.
Justice Anjaria’s scholarly contributions include several articles and write-ups on constitutional and legal subjects published in journals and edited volumes. Notably, he authored High Court of Gujarat: Advent and Ascent for the Golden Jubilee Souvenir published by the High Court of Gujarat in April 2010.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on September 6, 2013. On February 25, 2024, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
Justice Anjaria was elevated to the Supreme Court of India and took oath as a judge on May 30, 2025.
