Justice Vijay Bishnoi was born on 26th March 1964 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He enrolled as an advocate on 8th July 1989, beginning a legal career marked by versatility and depth. He practiced extensively before the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal at Jodhpur, handling a broad array of matters including civil, criminal, constitutional, service, and election law.
Between 2000 and 2004, he served as the Additional Central Government Standing Counsel, and also represented several key public institutions. His clientele included the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, the Bar Council of India, the Bar Council of Rajasthan, BSNL, BPCL, and various other government-owned companies. Additionally, he appeared for multiple departments of the Government of Rajasthan, as well as numerous co-operative banks and universities, before the Rajasthan High Court.
Justice Bishnoi was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 8th January 2013, and was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on 7th January 2015. On 5th February 2024, he took oath as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
Subsequently, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India and assumed office as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 30th May 2025. He is due to retire on 25th March 2029.
