The Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have registered cases against Meta India Head Arun Srinivas and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over alleged objectionable and morphed posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests.

The cases were filed after two complainants alleged that they came across AI-generated and digitally manipulated videos and images of the Prime Minister on Instagram. They claimed the posts portrayed PM Modi in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner and were accompanied by abusive comments.

According to the complaints, such content could mislead the public, spread misinformation, incite hatred, disturb public order and defame public figures.

The complaints were filed by S. Aravind Reddy, a businessman, and T. Saikiran Goud, a BJP activist from Telangana.

The action comes as several social media posts shared during the student protests have come under police scrutiny for allegedly containing abusive and offensive remarks against the Prime Minister.

The development follows a recent controversy in which a video uploaded from PM Modi's official Facebook account was briefly blocked, drawing criticism from the Central government.

Following the incident, Meta reportedly assured the government that it has strengthened safeguards for posts from the Prime Minister's account. According to sources, decisions involving such posts will now be reviewed by senior company officials before any action is taken.

Meta representatives are also expected to meet government officials later this week to discuss content moderation and other regulatory issues.

Earlier, the Delhi Police had directed social media platforms to remove posts and videos containing allegedly abusive remarks against PM Modi that were shared during the Jantar Mantar student protests and the July 20 'Sansad Chalo' march. Notices were also issued to several social media accounts, including some news portals.
