NLU Delhi Appoints Former CJI DY Chandrachud as Distinguished Professor

The National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi) has announced the appointment of former Chief Justice of India, Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, as a Distinguished Professor. This significant academic collaboration marks a new chapter in the university’s engagement with constitutional scholarship.

As part of this initiative, NLU Delhi will set up a Centre for Constitutional Studies, with Justice Chandrachud guiding the centre’s research vision and scholarly direction.

Speaking on the development, Vice-Chancellor Prof. GS Bajpai remarked,

“Justice Chandrachud’s legacy in constitutional morality, transformative constitutionalism, and the dynamic interpretation of fundamental rights offers unparalleled empirical and doctrinal material for academic inquiry.”

The collaboration is expected to deepen NLU Delhi’s research and teaching in constitutional law, enriching academic discourse and contributing to jurisprudential development.

Additionally, the university will launch a new lecture series titled “In the Spirit of Justice: The DYC Distinguished Lecture Series”, beginning in July 2025. The series will critically engage with the landmark judgments authored by Justice Chandrachud — spanning themes such as privacy, LGBTQ+ rights, gender justice, digital freedoms, and judicial reforms — offering insights into the constitutional philosophy of India’s 50th Chief Justice.
