The Law Ministry on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that over 4.65 crore cases are currently pending in District and Subordinate Courts across the country.
The data was shared in response to an unstarred question regarding the backlog of cases in various courts.
Citing figures from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) as of July 21, 2025, the Ministry provided a snapshot of the pendency at different levels of the judiciary:
Supreme Court: 86,742 cases
High Courts: 63,30,409 cases
District and Subordinate Courts: 4,65,27,906 cases
The numbers reflect the mounting pressure on the judicial system and underline the urgent need for reforms to reduce delays in case disposal. While the government has taken steps to increase judicial infrastructure and digitize court processes, the backlog remains a significant challenge.
