Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has approached the Supreme Court challenging a series of orders passed by the Allahabad High Court in a petition alleging that he possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The matter is scheduled to come up before a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana on August 17.

Gandhi has also filed a separate transfer petition before the Supreme Court seeking transfer of the proceedings.

The challenge relates to directions issued by the Allahabad High Court concerning allegations raised by BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir, who has sought an investigation against Gandhi and other members of his family.

In May, the High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to verify the allegations made by Shishir.

Last month, the High Court sought a fresh affidavit from the CBI detailing the status of its inquiry. However, the Bench of Justice Brij Raj Singh and Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan expressed dissatisfaction with the agency's response.

In its July 20 order, the Court observed that the CBI's counter-affidavit did not comply with its earlier directions and that the progress of the investigation could not be ascertained from the response.

The High Court further noted that the ED had taken the necessary steps and could proceed with the matter if the investigation revealed material warranting further action.

The Court also directed that the proceedings continue before the same Bench as a part-heard matter and listed the case for August 20. Gandhi has now challenged these directions before the Supreme Court.

Separately, another petition filed by Shishir is pending before the Allahabad High Court, seeking criminal action against Gandhi over alleged violations of citizenship laws. Shishir has claimed that Gandhi held a British passport in addition to his Indian citizenship.

In that matter, the High Court had initially directed registration of an FIR against Gandhi. The judge subsequently withheld the direction and recused himself from the case after Shishir made certain social media posts concerning the proceedings.

That petition remains pending before the High Court.
