SC Bars Photography, Videography Inside High-Security Zone; Warns of Strict Action for Violators
The Supreme Court of India has issued a circular strictly prohibiting photography and videography inside its High-Security Zone, except for official purposes. The directive, dated 10th September 2025, seeks to maintain discipline and security within court premises.
According to the circular, media personnel may conduct interviews and live broadcasts only in the designated Low-Security Zone (lawns) and not within the High-Security Zone. The use of mobile phones, cameras, tripods, selfie sticks, or other equipment for creating reels, clicking photos, or shooting videos has been expressly banned in the restricted area.
The guidelines further state that:
• Advocates, litigants, interns, and law clerks violating the rules will face disciplinary action by their respective Bar Associations or State Bar Councils.
• Media personnel found in violation may be denied access to the High-Security Zone for up to one month.
• Registry staff breaching the rules will face departmental action, while heads of departments will ensure strict compliance.
• Security personnel have been empowered to immediately disallow anyone attempting to take photographs or videos in the restricted zone.
The circular, signed by Secretary General Shekhar C. Mungate, underscores that violations will be dealt with “seriously” to ensure the sanctity and security of the Court’s functioning.
This move comes amid growing concerns about unauthorized recordings and circulation of court visuals on social media, which could compromise both decorum and security protocols.
