Breaking: SC to have 5 more judges: Collegium Recommends Elevation of Four Chief Justices, One Senior Advocate as SC Judges

The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meetings held on May 22 and May 27, 2026, has recommended the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and one Senior Advocate to the Supreme Court of India.

The names recommended for appointment as Judges of the Supreme Court are:

  1. Justice Sheel Nagu, presently serving as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, with parent High Court being the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

  2. Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, currently Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, whose parent High Court is the Jharkhand High Court.

  3. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, serving as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, with parent High Court being the Delhi High Court.

  4. Justice Arun Palli, presently Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, whose parent High Court is the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

  5. V. Mohana, Senior Advocate practicing before the Supreme Court of India

The recommendations were made by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India and will now be forwarded to the Central Government for approval and notification. This will make the strength of the Supreme Court 37 for the first time after the recent enhancement 38 from 34 judges. The number of woman judges would also reach to 2 after the elevation of Ms. V. Mohana.
