Supreme Court Bar Association Mourns Passing of Col. R. Balasubramanian, Senior Advocate

The legal fraternity was struck by grief today with the news of the passing of Colonel R. Balasubramanian, Senior Advocate, who breathed his last in Delhi. His demise has been formally announced by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), which expressed its “profound grief and sorrow” at the loss of a distinguished member of the Bar.

According to the communication issued by the SCBA, the cremation will take place on September 15, 2025, at 2:30 PM at Brar Square Cremation Ground, Delhi Cantonment.

A Distinguished Career

Col. R. Balasubramanian was not only a respected Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India but also carried the distinguished background of having served as a Colonel in the Indian Army. His dual legacy as a soldier and a lawyer earned him admiration across professions.

Known for his deep knowledge of constitutional and service law, Col. Balasubramanian argued several important cases before the Supreme Court and High Courts, where his disciplined approach and clarity of legal thought made him a figure of inspiration for juniors and peers alike.

Over the years, Col. Balasubramanian played a pivotal role in mentoring young lawyers and actively contributed to the growth of the Bar. His presence at the Supreme Court corridors was marked by his humility, commitment to justice, and an unfailing sense of duty—qualities that reflected his military background.

Members of the SCBA described him as a “gentleman to the core” and someone who combined the rigour of a soldier with the compassion of a lawyer. His passing leaves behind a void in both the legal fraternity and the wider community of those who had the privilege of working with him.

Senior members of the Bar, colleagues, and juniors are expected to gather at Brar Square Cremation Ground later today to pay their last respects. Messages of condolence have poured in from across the country, acknowledging his immense contribution to the Supreme Court practice and his unwavering service to the cause of justice.

The SCBA, through its Hony. Secretary, noted that Col. Balasubramanian’s death is an “irreparable loss” and urged members to come together to honour his memory.
