The Supreme Court of India is set to launch a Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education and has also proposed an annual “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman” to recognise outstanding contributions to legal education.
The initiative was announced by the Chief Justice of India on Teachers' Day, September 5, with the lecture series proposed to follow the theme “One important idea. Every month.”
Each edition will feature a Distinguished Lecture by an eminent jurist, scholar, legal educationist or domain expert. The lecture will be followed by an “Ideas Dialogue”, where selected young advocates, law students and researchers will participate in discussions and raise questions.
The Supreme Court said the initiative is designed to go beyond a conventional lecture format and promote meaningful interaction between established legal institutions and younger members of the legal community.
The lectures will also be professionally recorded and accompanied by edited transcripts and concise Ideas Papers, creating a permanent archive of contemporary legal thought. The proceedings will be livestreamed, with summaries proposed in Indian languages to widen access among the legal and academic community across the country.
As part of the initiative, the Supreme Court has proposed an annual “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman”, a non-monetary honour for distinguished contributions to legal education.
The award is proposed to be presented around Teachers' Day every year to one or two distinguished legal educationists. The first award will follow the inaugural lecture.
The first edition of the lecture series will be held in September 2026, with one lecture planned every month thereafter.
The Supreme Court said the initiative seeks to promote deeper legal thought, meaningful dialogue and wider participation, while creating an enduring institutional tradition and a lasting public resource on law and justice.
