Table for Two? SC Suggests Dinner Date to Divorcing Couple for Child’s Sake

In a heartening gesture aimed at encouraging reconciliation, the Supreme Court on Monday advised a couple undergoing divorce proceedings to meet over dinner in hopes of resolving their issues amicably.

The suggestion came while a bench comprising Justice B V Nagarathna and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma was hearing a plea filed by a fashion entrepreneur, who sought permission to travel abroad with her three-year-old child.

"You have a three-year-old child. Why let ego come in the way?" the bench remarked, emphasizing the importance of co-parenting and mutual understanding. "Our canteen may not suffice for this. We will provide another drawing room. Meet over dinner tonight. Much can happen over a cup of coffee," the court gently advised.

Encouraging the couple to leave behind past grievances and focus on the child’s future, the court expressed hope for a positive outcome.

"On the request made by senior counsel for the petitioner regarding travel with the minor child, we have directed both parties to interact with each other and report back tomorrow," the bench stated, posting the matter for further hearing on Tuesday.
