Telangana HC Grants Pawan Khera One-Week Transit Bail in Assam FIR Case

The Telangana High Court has granted one-week transit anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case filed by Assam Police.

The FIR was registered over remarks Khera made about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family.

The bench of Justice K Sujana said that even though the FIR was filed in Assam, the court can give temporary protection in such inter-state matters. The judge noted that Khera had a genuine fear of arrest, especially after police teams from Assam and Delhi carried out search operations at his residence in Delhi.

The issue began after a press conference on April 4, where Khera made allegations about the Chief Minister and his wife, including claims about holding multiple passports and involvement in illegal activities. Following this, a complaint was filed and an FIR was registered in Guwahati under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The High Court clarified that this relief is only temporary. Khera has been given seven days to approach a court in Assam and seek regular anticipatory bail.

The court has also set conditions. Khera must submit a personal bond of ₹1 lakh with two sureties, cooperate with the investigation, appear when called for questioning, and not leave the country without permission. He has also been told not to influence witnesses or tamper with evidence.

The judge further advised Khera, being a public figure, to remain cautious and avoid making any public statements that could affect the investigation.

The Court made it clear that it has not commented on the merits of the case, and the final decision on bail will be taken by the appropriate court in Assam.
