Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a student within the premises of a law college in South Kolkata, police confirmed on Thursday.
“Based on the complaint filed by the woman, three persons have been arrested. As per her statement, the incident occurred on June 25. The investigation is ongoing,” a senior police officer said. One of the accused is reportedly a former student of the institution.
All three accused are expected to be produced before the court on Friday.
The incident has sparked a political row in West Bengal. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari slammed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, stating, “Anything can happen in this state. Last year, a junior doctor was raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. There is no safety for women here. The Chief Minister will now term it a small incident and offer money to the victim. She must resign.”
In response, TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar called Adhikari’s remarks opportunistic. “It is unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition is using a grave social issue for political attacks. We must stand united against such social evils,” he said.
This latest incident comes less than a year after a post-graduate medical trainee was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College, also in Kolkata, raising fresh concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions.
