“Ten People Look At Us And Shout, Which Voice Do We Catch?” — Supreme Court Rebukes Lawyers Over Chaotic Submissions

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday expressed dismay over the growing practice of lawyers making out-of-turn submissions, calling the conduct disorderly and detrimental to effective hearings.

A Bench comprising Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and SVN Bhatti made the sharp observation during the hearing of a Special Leave Petition related to a Calcutta High Court order concerning the custody of a seized vehicle and goods.

As multiple advocates representing the petitioner began speaking simultaneously, the Bench interrupted and issued a stern rebuke. Justice Bhatti remarked:

“One counsel please… Somehow in the Supreme Court, I am unable to assimilate this—ten people look at us and shout, which voice do we catch? I have seen more damage caused this way than any help for the claimant.”

When the lead counsel clarified that a lawyer from the Calcutta High Court was also present and had intervened, the Bench responded with further concern.

“In High Courts such things don’t happen. Why should he do it when he is coming to the Supreme Court?” Justice Bhatti said.

The remarks reflect the Court’s ongoing frustration with frequent disruptions and lack of courtroom decorum by legal professionals. Although the Bench accepted the counsel’s apology, Justice Bhatti added pointedly:

“Please don’t take it otherwise. Sometimes, we also get irritated.”
