The Central Government recently cleared the appointments of four High Court Chief Justices—Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Arun Palli—along with Senior Advocate V. Mohana, who has been directly elevated from the Bar.

The oath of office will be administered at the Supreme Court premises, after which all five appointees will formally assume office as judges of the country's highest constitutional court.

The appointments were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and were notified by the Centre earlier this week. With the induction of the five judges, the Supreme Court will have 37 judges against its newly enhanced sanctioned strength of 38.

Among the new appointees, V. Mohana's elevation is particularly historic, as she becomes only the second woman in the history of the Supreme Court to be directly elevated from the Bar, after Justice Indu Malhotra in 2018. Her appointment will also raise the number of sitting women judges in the apex court to two.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by senior judges of the Supreme Court, members of the Bar, and other dignitaries from the legal fraternity.
