Abbas Ansari, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) legislator and son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly after being convicted in a hate speech case, official sources confirmed on Sunday.
Ansari represented the Mau Sadar constituency, which has now been declared vacant. His disqualification follows a two-year jail sentence handed down on Saturday by a special MP-MLA court in connection with a hate speech made during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
According to the prosecution, during a public rally at Paharpur ground on March 3, 2022, Abbas Ansari—then contesting on an SBSP ticket as part of the Samajwadi Party-led alliance—allegedly threatened local administration officials, vowing to "settle scores" after the elections.
He was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including:
-
Section 189 (threatening a public servant),
-
Section 153-A (promoting enmity between groups),
-
Section 171F (undue influence in elections), and
-
Section 506 (criminal intimidation).
Following arguments from both sides, Judge K.P. Singh sentenced Ansari to:
-
Two years each under Sections 189 and 153-A,
-
One year under Section 506,
-
Six months under Section 171F.
All sentences are to run concurrently, and a fine of ₹2,000 was imposed.
Under the Representation of the People Act, any lawmaker sentenced to two years or more stands disqualified from holding office.
Abbas Ansari had won the Mau Sadar seat in 2022, marking his first term as MLA. The SBSP, which was part of the Samajwadi alliance at the time, is currently aligned with the ruling BJP-led coalition in Uttar Pradesh, and its president serves as a cabinet minister.
The Mau Sadar seat was previously represented for several terms by Abbas Ansari’s father, Mukhtar Ansari, who died of cardiac arrest in March 2024 while lodged in Banda district jail.
