Actor Rajpal Yadav was released from Tihar Jail on Tuesday, 12 days after surrendering in connection with a cheque bounce and loan default case involving nearly ₹9 crore.
The Delhi High Court granted him interim bail on Monday, providing temporary relief in a long-running financial dispute linked to his 2012 film project Ata Pata Laapata.
Although bail was approved a day earlier, Yadav’s release was delayed due to routine verification and paperwork, which were completed later on Tuesday.
Speaking to ANI after his release, the actor thanked the court and his supporters, saying he remains available to respond to all allegations. He also reflected on his long association with the film industry, noting that he would complete 30 years in Bollywood in 2027.
Yadav had surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5 after the court declined his request for additional time to clear his dues. The case pertains to a principal loan of ₹5 crore, which, with interest and penalties, has reportedly risen to around ₹9 crore.
Following the grant of interim bail, businessman Madhav Gopal Agrawal, who extended the loan, spoke to News Pinch about the dispute. Agrawal said he was introduced to Yadav through MP Mithilesh Kumar Katheria, and was informed that the actor’s film was close to completion and urgently required funds.
Agrawal claimed he agreed to lend the money after initial hesitation, following emotional appeals from Yadav’s wife. He asserted that the agreement categorically treated the amount as a loan—independent of the film’s commercial outcome—and that personal guarantees and cheques were provided.
According to Agrawal, multiple supplementary agreements were later executed and fresh cheques issued, all of which were allegedly dishonoured. The dispute eventually escalated, leading to Yadav’s surrender earlier this month.
While interim bail has now been granted, the legal proceedings continue, with the final outcome yet to be decided by the court
