Allahabad HCBA Suspends Strike Over Justice Varma’s Transfer

The Allahabad High Court Bar Association (HCBA) has suspended its protest against the transfer of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma to Allahabad High Court.

Key Decisions by HCBA on March 29:

  • The strike will remain suspended until the inquiry report on Justice Yashwant Varma is received. Judicial work will resume on April 1, 2025.

  • A Photo Identification Center will be set up to help litigants and lawyers.

  • A national-level press conference will be held in Prayagraj on April 26-27, 2025, to seek support from other Bar Associations.

The issue started when firefighters found unaccounted cash at Justice Varma’s home after a fire broke out on March 14. Justice Varma and his wife were in Madhya Pradesh at the time, while their daughter and elderly mother were at home.

After the cash recovery, there were demands for his impeachment. On March 21, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna ordered an inquiry by three High Court judges. The Supreme Court also published a report from the Delhi High Court Chief Justice and Justice Varma’s response.

Despite opposition, the Supreme Court Collegium transferred Justice Varma to Allahabad High Court. In response, the HCBA went on an indefinite strike.

On March 28, the Central government approved the transfer, and the Supreme Court directed that Justice Varma should not be assigned any judicial work for now.

Following these events, the HCBA has put its protest on hold until the inquiry report is out. The Bar Association has also decided not to attend Justice Varma’s oath-taking ceremony
