Bar Council of Maharashtra Seeks Action Over Protocol Breach During CJI Gavai’s Mumbai Visit

The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa has passed a resolution urging action against officials responsible for a breach of protocol during Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai’s visit to Mumbai on May 18—his first visit to the city after taking oath as CJI.

The resolution followed observations made by CJI Gavai during a felicitation event organized by the Bar Council, where he noted the absence of key state officials—including the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Mumbai’s Police Commissioner—upon his arrival.

However, the Supreme Court later issued a statement from New Delhi downplaying the incident. Quoting the CJI, the statement called the lapse a “trivial issue” that should not be exaggerated and recommended that the matter be considered closed. It also mentioned that all parties involved had expressed regret over the incident.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was also present at the event, supported the CJI's comments, underlining that protocol adherence is “fundamental” and must be upheld across institutions.
