Bengaluru Stadium Stampede: Karnataka Govt Blames RCB for Mismanagement, Vows Action

Karnataka Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Thursday assured strict action against those responsible for the June 4 stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which left 11 people dead and over 50 injured during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration.

Following the submission of a status report to the Karnataka High Court, the government pointed to serious lapses by RCB and event organiser DNA Entertainment Networks. According to the report, RCB failed to obtain formal police permission for the event and proceeded to promote it on social media, including video appeals by cricketer Virat Kohli, despite police denial.

The report states that on the day of the event, RCB repeatedly invited fans for a free-entry parade and celebration. However, with nearly 3 lakh people gathering, organisers abruptly announced entry would now require passes—contradicting earlier messages and causing chaos at the gates.

The government held RCB, DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) responsible for poor coordination and crowd mismanagement. Seven police personnel were injured, and a scaled-down event was allowed under police control to prevent further panic.

In response to the tragedy, the State suspended senior police officials at Cubbon Park Police Station on June 5 and constituted a one-man judicial commission led by a retired High Court judge to investigate the incident.

“This is not a blame game. We will wait for the final report and take appropriate action,” Minister Rao said.
