The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay an enhanced interim maintenance of ₹4 lakh per month to his estranged wife and minor daughter, revising a lower court order.
Justice Dr Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee modified the trial court’s earlier direction of ₹1.3 lakh per month, increasing the amount to ₹1.5 lakh for the wife and ₹2.5 lakh for the daughter. The revised sum will remain in effect until the final disposal of the domestic violence case pending against Shami.
Observing that the revised maintenance was necessary to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, the Court stated:
“In my considered opinion, a sum of ₹1,50,000 per month to petitioner no.1 (wife) and ₹2,50,000 to her daughter would be just, fair and reasonable… Such amount is to be paid by the opposite party/husband from the date of filing of the application under Section 23 of the PWDV Act.”
The Court further clarified that Shami is free to contribute additional amounts voluntarily towards his daughter’s educational or other expenses, should he wish to do so.
