The Calcutta High Court criticized a well-known South Kolkata school after a Class 10 student was almost barred from taking the ongoing West Bengal Madhyamik examinations due to a name mix-up.
The confusion arose because two students shared the name Ayan Das, leading the school to mistakenly forward the details of an ineligible student to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), while the eligible student was left without an admit card just days before the exams, which began on February 2.
Taking serious note of the error, Justice Amrita Sinha imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the school and directed the WBBSE to make urgent arrangements to allow the student to appear for the examination.
The court ordered that Ayan Das be formally enrolled by Friday evening and that his admit card be issued immediately. The Board was also instructed to register the student upon receipt of the prescribed late fee or fine from the school.
The High Court further directed departmental action against the school official responsible for the oversight, highlighting the negligence that almost prevented the student from sitting for his exams.
