Calcutta HC to Hear Pleas Seeking Independent Probe Into Gang-Rape of Law Student Once Filed

The Calcutta High Court on Monday stated that it will consider petitions demanding an independent investigation into the alleged gang-rape of a first-year law student in Kolkata, once such pleas are formally filed before the court.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De made the observation after several advocates urgently mentioned the matter, seeking immediate judicial intervention. The Bench directed them to file the petitions and ensure that copies are served to all concerned parties.

According to The Indian Express, the survivor, a student of South Calcutta Law College, was allegedly raped on June 25 inside the security guard room on campus. A medical examination conducted at a government hospital reportedly supports the survivor’s claims, though officials have not disclosed specific findings.

Four persons — Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed, and a college security guard — have so far been arrested by the Kolkata Police. Mishra is alleged to have committed the act, while the others reportedly filmed the incident with the intent to blackmail.

Notably, Mishra is said to be affiliated with the youth wing of the Trinamool Congress.

All four accused were remanded to police custody on June 27.
