Centre Approves Appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

The Central government has cleared the appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, recommended his name in a meeting held on January 9, 2026. Justice Paul will formally take charge as Chief Justice from the day he assumes office.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment in a post on X. Justice Paul has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court since September 2025. Earlier, he had also held the position of Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court in January 2025.

Originally from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Paul was transferred to the Telangana High Court in 2024 on personal grounds. Following the transfer, he took oath as a judge of the Telangana High Court on March 26, 2024.

Justice Paul enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990. Over the years, he practised across a wide range of subjects, including civil, constitutional, industrial, and service law, before various courts.

He was elevated as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur on May 27, 2011, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on April 14, 2014.
