The Central government on Friday approved the appointment of advocates Gautam Ashwin Ankhad and Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar as additional judges of the Bombay High Court.
A notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice stated that the appointments have been made under Article 224(1) of the Constitution of India for a period of two years, in the order of their seniority. The judges will assume charge upon taking office.
The appointments were based on recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium in September 2024.
With these additions, the Bombay High Court, which currently has 64 sitting judges against a sanctioned strength of 94, is expected to see a slight easing in its workload.
