Centre Reappoints Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General for 3 More Years; Five ASGs Also Get Fresh Terms

The Centre has reappointed Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General for India for another three years.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his reappointment, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 20. His new term will begin on July 1, 2026, and will continue for three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Mehta has been serving as the country's Solicitor General since October 2018. He was last reappointed in July 2023 for a term ending on June 30, 2026.

The ACC has also approved fresh terms for five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) appearing before the Supreme Court.

Senior Advocates Vikramjit Banerjee and KM Nataraj have been reappointed as ASGs from July 1, 2026. Senior Advocates Suryaprakash V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati have been reappointed with effect from June 30, 2026.

All five will serve for another three years or until further orders.

Banerjee was first appointed as an ASG in March 2018, while Nataraj joined the office in January 2019. Both were earlier reappointed in 2023.

Raju, Venkataraman and Bhati were first appointed as ASGs in June 2020 and were also reappointed in 2023.

The government has also extended the tenure of Senior Advocate Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court.

Sharma has been given a six-month extension from July 1, 2026, or until further orders. He was first appointed to the post in July 2020 and was reappointed in 2023 for a term ending on June 30, 2026.
