In a significant step toward enhancing transparency in the judiciary, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Saturday formally launched the live streaming of proceedings from the Bombay High Court.
Initially, the facility will be available for hearings before five benches of the court:
-
Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep V Marne
-
Justice R P Mohite-Dere and Justice Dr Neela Kedar Gokhale
-
Justice M S Sonak and Justice Jitendra Shantilal Jain
-
Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice M M Sathaye
-
Justice A S Gadkari and Justice Rajesh S Patil
The move follows an earlier announcement by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, who had indicated that technical arrangements were being made to enable live streaming soon.
Alongside the live-streaming feature, the Bombay High Court will also benefit from the installation of free Wi-Fi and internet access within its premises — another initiative launched by the CJI on the same day.
The Bombay High Court now joins a growing list of High Courts that have adopted live streaming, including those in Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Calcutta, Gauhati, and Orissa. Several courts have also adopted hybrid hearing systems that allow public access to court proceedings via virtual links.
At the national level, the Supreme Court has already been live streaming Constitution Bench hearings, marking a broader shift toward greater accessibility and openness in the judicial process.
