Court Extends Judicial Custody of 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana Till July 9

A Delhi court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, till July 9.

Special Judge Chander Jit Singh passed the order after Rana was produced before the court via video conferencing on the expiry of his previous remand. During the hearing, the judge also directed Tihar Jail authorities to file a status report on Rana’s health by June 9, following concerns raised by his counsel regarding his medical condition.

Rana, a U.S. citizen and a close associate of 26/11 key conspirator David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, was extradited to India after the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed his review petition against extradition on April 4.

Last month, the court had remanded Rana to judicial custody following his arrival in India.

Rana is accused of playing a key role in the conspiracy behind the November 26, 2008 attacks, in which ten Pakistani terrorists carried out a series of coordinated strikes in Mumbai targeting the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish centre. The 60-hour siege claimed the lives of 166 people and left over 300 injured.
