Court Questions Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's Mango Consumption: Compliance with Approved Diet Chart?

Court Questions Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's Mango Consumption: Compliance with Approved Diet Chart?

Today, the Delhi Court announced its intention to assess whether Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal adhered to the court-sanctioned dietary guidelines while receiving homemade meals during his judicial custody.

The Court made this oral observation while postponing its decision on an application submitted by Kejriwal. In the application, Kejriwal requested permission for insulin administration while in jail and the opportunity to consult with his doctors via video conferencing (VC). He specifically asked for a daily 15-minute VC session to address his acute diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar levels. Additionally, he sought permission for his wife to join and participate in the VC sessions.

It was presented on behalf of Kejriwal that mangoes were included in the home-cooked meals sent to him during his judicial custody only three times, out of a total of 48 meals.

The Enforcement Directorate informed a Delhi Court on Thursday that despite Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's assertion of high sugar levels, he continues to consume mangoes, sweets, and sugary tea while in jail.

Zoheb Hossain, special counsel for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), informed Special Judge Kaveri Baweja that Arvind Kejriwal aims to elevate his sugar levels as a basis for seeking bail in the money laundering case.

During the court proceedings, Kejriwal applied for permission to consult his regular doctor in jail through virtual conferencing, citing fluctuations in his blood sugar levels as the reason for his request.

Singhvi informed Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue Courts that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has portrayed mangoes as "sugar bullets," suggesting they are harmful. He also mentioned that Kejriwal was provided with "aaloo poori" only once, as Navratri prasad, during his time in jail.

“They said I used sugar with tea. I used sugar free in my tea. Because I am a diabetic…. How petty and political and ridiculous ED can get,” Singhvi said.

Singhvi further remarked, "We have enjoyed democracy for 75 years... but I have never witnessed, let alone experienced, such pettiness before."

Senior Advocate Ramesh Gupta, also representing Kejriwal, objected to the presence of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and asserted that the central probe agency has no jurisdiction in this matter. Gupta emphasized that the issue at hand pertains solely to interactions between the Chief Minister and the jail authorities.

Kejriwal was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the night of March 21. His judicial custody is due to expire on April 23.On April 10, the Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest, noting that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had presented sufficient evidence, including statements from approvers and AAP candidates, indicating that Kejriwal had received funds for the Goa elections.
