Court verdict in gangrape case during Muzaffarnagar riots, two people sentenced to 20 years

The court of Muzaffarnagar has sentenced two accused of gang rape to 20 years imprisonment. The case pertains to the 2013 communal riots in Shamli. The bench headed by Judge Anjani Kumar Singh passed an order sentencing the accused Maheshveer and Sikandar. It has been said in the order that both raped the helpless woman. The woman was going to the sugarcane field with her son to save herself from the riots. The incident is on 8 September 2013. The communal riots started in Muzaffarnagar. Soon the surrounding areas also came under the grip of riots.

More than 60 people had died in the conflict between the two communities and more than five thousand people were rendered homeless. On Tuesday, the order of punishment has come on the instructions of the Supreme Court. A few months ago, the Supreme Court of the country had directed to hear the case on a priority basis. On March 13, the Supreme Court heard the petition of advocate Vrinda Grover on behalf of the aggrieved party. During the hearing, the lower court was instructed.

The fast track court in its order accepted the statement of the main witness i.e. the victim as correct. The court said that the victim's statement regarding the incident of rape is not contradictory. According to the statement, the victim was alone with her son as her husband had gone to see a doctor. The victim had further told that to save herself from the riots, she decided to take shelter in the farm. Communal riots broke out due to the spread of rumours of the murder of a man near the Badi Masjid.
