A Delhi court on Tuesday sought a response from the Delhi Police on an anticipatory bail plea filed by Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor A Bimol Akoijam in connection with a sexual harassment case registered against him.
Several students have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Akoijam, following which the Delhi Police registered an FIR under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Special Judge Digvinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts heard Akoijam's anticipatory bail plea and sought the investigating agency's response.
The Court directed that no coercive action be taken against Akoijam until November 5, when the matter will be heard next. It also directed the investigating officer to remain present during the next hearing.
During the hearing, Akoijam's counsel informed the Court that he had been granted transit anticipatory bail by a court in Manipur, which was subsequently extended by the Patiala House Court on October 29.
The counsel further submitted that Akoijam had joined the investigation and was cooperating with the police.
Earlier, JNU had terminated Akoijam's services with immediate effect on October 9 following an inquiry into the sexual harassment allegations.
The Congress MP was associated with the university's Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences.
On November 2, the Delhi High Court stayed the university's decision to terminate his services after Akoijam challenged the action.
Akoijam has denied the allegations and maintained that they are politically motivated.
