Delhi Court Sends 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana to Tihar Jail Till June 6

A Delhi court on Friday remanded Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to judicial custody till June 6.

Rana was produced before Special NIA Judge Chander Jit Singh, a day before his custodial interrogation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was scheduled to conclude.

The court’s order came on the NIA’s request, following which Rana was sent to Tihar Jail.

Rana, a close associate of David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani—the main conspirator of the 2008 Mumbai attacks—is a U.S. citizen. He was brought to India after the U.S. Supreme Court, on April 4, dismissed his review petition challenging extradition.

He was initially sent to NIA custody for 18 days on April 11. This was extended by another 12 days on April 28 after the agency informed the court that Rana could reveal vital information about both ongoing and future terror plots by Lashkar-e-Taiba and its leader Hafiz Saeed.

The NIA told the court that it was interrogating Rana in a "measured" way due to his health conditions, in contrast to Rana’s claim of being questioned for 20 hours a day. The agency also cited his alleged non-cooperation as a reason for seeking continued custody.

On April 30, the court permitted the NIA to collect Rana’s voice and handwriting samples as part of the investigation.

The 26/11 Mumbai attacks, carried out on November 26, 2008, saw 10 Pakistani terrorists unleash terror across Mumbai, targeting a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish center after infiltrating India via the sea route. The three-day siege claimed 166 lives and left hundreds injured.
